Residents accepted into New York Eye and Ear Infirmary of Mount Sinai’s (NYEE) one-year clinical Glaucoma Fellowship will focus on the medical and surgical management of both adult and pediatric glaucoma. Glaucoma fellows will get comprehensive exposure to all types of glaucoma and will learn to competently perform traditional glaucoma procedures, such as trabeculectomy and tube shunt surgery, as well as newer MIGS procedures, such as Trabectome and iStent. Fellows will also assist on surgeries involving newer investigational devices that are performed by the attending staff.

During the course of the program, fellows will participate in weekly glaucoma fellows’ clinic, under the supervision of NYEE attendings. The clinic is conducted on Mondays; for the remainder of the week, the fellows will split their time between consulting privately with full time faculty and participating in surgery.

Each fellow is expected to complete at least one research project resulting in publication. The fellow can present his/her findings at regional or national conferences, as well as at the annual New York Eye and Ear Infirmary Research Day. In addition, wet lab sessions are held throughout the year in the state-of-the-art Jorge N. Buxton Microsurgical Education Center. Training sessions focus on suturing techniques, as well as the basic steps involved in filtering and shunt procedures.

The New York Eye and Ear Infirmary of Mount Sinai’s Glaucoma Fellowship Program seeks to attract a diverse group of individuals who are committed to developing a deep understanding of ophthalmic disease with a specialization in glaucoma, patient care, and vision research. Interviews are conducted by invitation only. NYEE’s Glaucoma Fellowship program participates in the Fellowship Matching Program sponsored by the Association of University Professors of Ophthalmology.
